The stone fabrication glossary
Plain-language definitions for the terms fabrication shops use every day — from bookmatch to zero reveal.
A
A-frame
The tall, A-shaped steel rack used to store and move slabs in the shop and on trucks. Slabs lean against both sides at a slight angle, and knowing what's on each A-frame is a core part of slab inventory. learn more
Apron-front sink
A sink with an exposed front panel that hangs over the cabinet edge — also called a farmhouse sink. The cutout wraps the apron, and the sink's weight usually needs its own support framing, so apron-front installs take more planning than standard undermounts.
B
Backsplash
A strip of countertop material set vertically against the wall behind the counter. It can be a short 4-inch piece, a full-height run up to the cabinets, or separate tile — cut from the same slab, it gives the most matched look.
Bookmatch
Mirroring two adjacent slab faces so their veining reflects like an open book. Slabs come in sequence from the same block and are polished on opposite faces, which is what makes the pattern line up. A favorite for islands, feature walls, and waterfall panels. learn more
Bullnose
A rounded edge profile. A full bullnose rounds the entire edge into a curve, while a half bullnose rounds just the top. It's comfortable to lean on, resists chipping, and is easy to wipe clean.
C
CAM (computer-aided manufacturing)
Software that turns shop drawings into machine instructions. In a stone shop, CAM translates surface geometry, cutouts, and edge profiles into toolpaths a CNC machine can execute.
Cantilever
A countertop section supported on one end only, extending past its support — bar overhangs are the classic case. The longer the unsupported span, the more likely you need steel brackets, corbels, or a supporting panel to keep it from cracking.
CNC (computer numerical control)
A router or saw that follows programmed toolpaths to cut, drill, shape, and polish stone automatically. CNCs produce repeatable sink knockouts and edge profiles with far less manual layout than hand fabrication. learn more
Cutout
Any opening cut into the slab — sink, cooktop, or faucet holes. Cutout placement affects the strength of the top, inside corners need radii to prevent cracking, and cutouts must be planned around seams and veining before the saw runs.
D
DXF
A CAD file format (Drawing Exchange Format) used to exchange 2D geometry between programs. Digital templating devices and CNC machines commonly import and export DXF, which makes it the de facto handoff file between the field and the shop. learn more
E
Eased edge
A straight edge profile with the sharpness lightly sanded off the top and bottom arris. It's the most economical profile, gives a clean modern look, and shows only a thin line of the slab's thickness.
Etch
Surface damage on calcium-based stone — marble, limestone, travertine — when acids like lemon juice, wine, or harsh cleaners dissolve the polished surface and leave a dull spot. An etch is not a stain sitting on top; it's damage in the stone, so it takes honing or repolishing to fix, not a cleaner. learn more
F
Fissure
A natural, hairline separation within the stone itself that was present in the slab as quarried or produced. Unlike a chip or a crack, a fissure is part of the stone's structure and is usually stable — telling the two apart matters a lot during slab inspection and customer walkthroughs.
Full-height splash
A backsplash cut from the same slab and carried up the wall to the underside of the cabinets or a sill. It gives a seamless, dramatic look and uses slab material instead of tile, though it consumes more of the sheet than a standard 4-inch splash.
G
Granite
A hard, natural igneous stone with visible grain that was the default countertop material for decades. It resists scratches and heat well, but many granites are slightly porous and benefit from periodic sealing. Properties vary significantly from color to color and quarry to quarry.
H
Honed
A smooth, matte finish with little to no gloss, produced by stopping the polishing process before the reflective stages. Popular on marble and soapstone for a softer look, and light etching tends to be less obvious on a honed surface than on a polished one.
K
Kerf
The width of the channel of material a blade removes as it cuts. A blade with a 10 mm kerf removes 10 mm of stone on every pass, which adds up fast on tight layouts — so real kerf width has to be accounted for when nesting pieces and calculating yield.
L
Laminated edge
An edge built up by gluing a second strip of stone underneath the top, doubling the apparent thickness — a 3cm top made to read as 6cm, for example. The glue line is hidden in the profile, and the built-up edge adds visual weight without the cost of thicker material.
Lippage
Uneven height across a seam, where one slab edge sits higher than its neighbor. Industry standards allow a small tolerance, but visible lippage is one of the most common callbacks — careful seam planning, leveling, and flat fabrication prevent it. learn more
M
Marble
A metamorphic stone made of recrystallized calcium carbonate — classic veining, a cool touch, and a softer surface than granite. It etches on contact with acids and scratches more easily, which many owners accept as part of the material's character. learn more
Mitered edge
An edge joint cut at 45 degrees so the top surface appears to wrap down the side of the slab. Miters make a 2cm or 3cm top look like a thick, solid block and are the join that makes waterfall panels possible.
N
Natural stone
Material cut directly from quarried rock — granite, marble, quartzite, soapstone, travertine, limestone, and more. Every slab is unique in veining and color, which is the appeal for customers and the challenge for layout, seam matching, and inventory.
Negative reveal
The countertop edge sits slightly inset from the cabinet face below it, so the cabinet stands a touch proud of the counter. The opposite of a positive reveal, and it demands accurate cabinets and precise templating to pull off cleanly.
O
Ogee
A decorative edge profile with an S-curve — concave flowing into convex. It reads formal and traditional, costs more to profile than a straight edge, and the thin points of the curve are more prone to chipping than an eased edge.
Overhang
The portion of countertop that extends past its supports — cabinet faces, or seating at a bar, which typically wants 10–12 inches. Overhangs beyond roughly a foot usually need corbels, brackets, or steel support so the stone doesn't crack at the fulcrum. learn more
P
Patina
The character a surface develops with age and use — subtle etching, softening, and wear. It's expected on marble and soapstone, and some customers prize it while others want it prevented; setting that expectation before the sale avoids callbacks.
PEL (permissible exposure limit)
OSHA's legal cap on worker exposure to a hazard. For respirable crystalline silica it's 50 micrograms per cubic meter of air, averaged over an 8-hour shift — shops stay under it with wet cutting, ventilation, housekeeping, and respirators where needed. learn more
Polished
The glossy, reflective finish produced by running the slab through progressively finer abrasives. Polishing closes the surface pores tightest, so it's generally the most stain-resistant finish and the one that shows stone color at its most saturated.
Porcelain (sintered surface)
An extremely hard, low-porosity surface made from refined clays and minerals fired at very high temperatures, often in thin large-format slabs. It resists heat, UV, and scratches, but the material is brittle to handle and fabricate, so it demands dedicated tooling and careful handling.
Positive reveal
The countertop edge sits slightly proud of the cabinet face below it — a small overhang, typically a fraction of an inch to an inch. It's the common default, it hides minor cabinet inconsistencies, and it reads as a shadow line at the counter edge.
Post-processor
Software that converts a CAM toolpath into the specific code dialect a given CNC machine and control actually understands. Every machine combination has its own post — running a toolpath through the wrong one can produce incorrect motion, so the post is validated before anything touches the stone.
Poultice
An absorbent paste mixed with a solvent, spread over a stain and left to dry so it draws the staining material back out of the stone. Oil, ink, and organic stains each call for different solvents, and stubborn stains may need several applications. learn more
Q
Quartz (engineered)
A manufactured surface of ground quartz bound with resin and pigment, typically over 90% mineral by weight. Because the resin makes it non-porous, it never needs sealing and shrugs off most stains — but the resin can scorch under hot pans, and prolonged UV isn't recommended, so it's generally an indoor material. learn more
Quartzite
A natural metamorphic stone formed when sandstone is compressed and heated deep underground. True quartzite is harder than granite and handles heat better than engineered quartz, with marble-like veining — but some slabs sold as quartzite are actually softer dolomarble, so testing and slab selection matter.
R
Remnant
The usable piece left over after the tops are cut from a slab. Remnants are ideal for vanities, hearths, window sills, and small projects — and tracking them by size, material, and location turns what used to be waste into margin. learn more
Resin
The polymer binder in engineered stone, or a factory treatment applied to natural slabs to fill micro-pits and reinforce fragile areas. Resin-filled slabs polish more uniformly — and resin is also the reason engineered quartz can't take a hot pan directly off the stove.
Rodding
Reinforcing a natural stone top by routing narrow channels near a sink or dishwasher cutout and epoxying steel or fiberglass rods into them. Cutouts remove a lot of material where the stone is weakest, and rodding adds hidden strength exactly where cracks tend to start.
S
Scribe
Cutting a countertop edge to follow an uneven wall so gaps disappear against drywall, tile, or stone. The scribe line is marked at templating or on the drawing and cut at the saw — tight scribing is the difference between a seamless install and one patched with caulk.
Seam
The joint where two countertop pieces meet. Seam quality depends on flat fabrication, vein and color matching, color-matched epoxy, and leveling on site — and good seam planning puts joints out of sight, away from stress points like sink and cooktop corners. learn more
Silica (respirable crystalline)
The microscopic crystalline dust released when stone is cut, ground, or polished. Inhaled respirable crystalline silica causes silicosis, lung cancer, and COPD — and engineered quartz is especially high in silica content, which is why OSHA caps exposure at 50 µg/m³ as an 8-hour average. learn more
Sintered stone
A manufactured surface made by sintering mineral particles under extreme heat and pressure, with no resin binder. That makes it far more heat- and UV-tolerant than resin-bound quartz and suitable for outdoor use, though its hardness and brittleness require specific fabrication tooling and handling.
Slab yield
How many usable pieces you can nest out of a slab — and by extension, how many slabs a job consumes. Better nesting means less waste, fewer slabs purchased, and lower material cost per job, which is why yield drives both purchasing and pricing. learn more
Soapstone
A soft, dense natural stone composed mostly of talc. It's chemically inert — acids don't etch it and it never needs sealing — but it darkens over time, scratches easily, and most scratches can be sanded or oiled back out.
T
2cm / 3cm slab
The two standard slab thicknesses — two or three centimeters, about 3/4 inch and 1 1/4 inches. 2cm suits vanities and thin modern profiles and often rides on a subtop in kitchens; 3cm is the standard for kitchen counters and typically spans cabinets unsupported.
Templating
Capturing the exact field dimensions and shapes before fabrication — with traditional rail and plastic templates or a digital measuring device. Templating accuracy drives everything downstream: fit against the wall, seam location, overhangs, and cutout placement. learn more
Toolpath
The programmed route a CNC cutter takes through the material — rip cuts, sink knockouts, faucet holes, edge profiles. Toolpaths are generated in CAM software and dry-run or simulated before machining, because a bad toolpath means scrap stone at best and a crashed machine at worst.
Travertine
A calcium carbonate stone formed in hot springs, known for natural pitting and a linear, banded texture. Like marble and limestone it etches on contact with acids, and it's most often sold filled and honed for countertop use. learn more
U
Undermount
A sink mounted beneath the cutout so the countertop edge is exposed above the basin. It needs a finished, polished cutout edge and proper mounting clips or brackets, and it lets you sweep crumbs straight into the sink — the main reason it outsells drop-in sinks in stone counters.
V
Veining
The mineral streaks and movement running through natural stone. Vein direction drives layout decisions — whether seams match, how bookmatches align, and where a waterfall miter lands — so fabricators nest pieces with the vein pattern in mind, not just the geometry. learn more
W
Waterfall edge
Countertop material continuing down the sides of an island to the floor, joined with mitered edges. The look lives or dies on the miter joint and vein continuity, so waterfall panels are usually laid out and matched on the slab before anything is cut. learn more
Waterjet
A machine that cuts stone with an ultra-high-pressure stream of water mixed with abrasive garnet. Because there's no heat, waterjets cut intricate shapes and tight inside corners without stressing or burning the material — common for inlays, complex miters, and odd-angle cuts.
Z
Zero reveal
A flush transition where the countertop edge sits exactly even with the adjacent surface — cabinet face, panel, or wall. It's the cleanest modern look, and it's also the least forgiving: cabinets and fabrication both have to be dead-on for a zero reveal to read as intentional.
