What you actually need to measure
Before you quote a job, the field record has to answer one question: what surface are we actually building? For every run, capture overall length and depth, the depth being the distance from the wall to the front edge of the cabinet. Measure each section of an L-shape or U-shape separately, and label which walls are walls versus open edges so the drawing never assumes a backsplash where there is none.
Sketch the layout on site rather than trusting memory. Note cabinet heights for any raised bars, mark where seams would land, and record material thickness — a 2cm top and a 3cm top sit and edge differently. Measure the run at the cabinet face and again at the back wall; if the two lengths differ, the wall is out of square and your top needs a scribed edge or a slight angle, not a perfectly straight cut. Record the diagonal across the run so the fabricator can see exactly how far the wall bows.
Always capture the largest dimension so the slab covers the full run, then trim to the wall during install. A top built to the optimistic short measurement will gap at one end and read as a mistake the customer notices immediately. A standard seating overhang runs 12 to 15 inches past the cabinet so someone can sit comfortably, and any overhang beyond roughly 12 inches requires support brackets or corbels because stone will not cantilever indefinitely.
