What a waterfall actually is (miters, not magic)

A waterfall island takes the countertop surface and continues it down one or both ends, all the way to the floor, so the slab appears to pour over the edge. There is no magic in it — the drop is built with 45-degree mitered joints, where the horizontal top and the vertical leg are cut at opposing angles and glued together so the seam lands on the corner. Often the top edge itself is a laminated built-up edge, mitered through the buildup so the full thickness reads as one piece of stone.

Understanding that construction matters for clients and fabricators alike. The waterfall is not a special slab — it is precision joinery in the same material, and its quality is entirely dependent on the accuracy of the miter cuts and the care of the glue-up.

The miter seam: where quality shows

Support and structure requirements

A waterfall leg is a column of stone standing on the floor, and it changes the structural conversation around the island. The cabinet frame or a dedicated support structure beneath the leg must bear its weight, keep it plumb, and stay dimensionally stable — an out-of-level floor or a weak frame will telegraph into the miter seam.
