That figure covers fabrication and manufacturing output; end-market estimates that add retail and installation run higher, which is why headlines citing $30B+ for "countertops" use a different ruler. Both can be true; they measure different things.

The kitchen side dominates. Freedonia Group projects US kitchen countertop demand of 662 million square feet by 2026, with kitchen applications representing about 70% of countertop consumption. Renovation work — not new construction — drives the majority of it, and that matters for demand planning: remodel spending tracks consumer confidence and housing turnover more than builder pipelines.

How many shops there are

Depending on where you draw the category lines, the US shop count looks like this:

All three undercount reality: fabricators classified under construction and installation codes, non-employer one-person shops, and cabinet-adjacent shops that cut stone on the side are not fully captured. What the work pays

Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data (May 2025, released 2026) puts median pay at:

  • $58,270 per year ($28.02/hour) — masonry workers, the broad occupation group that includes stonemasons.
  • $54,390 per year ($26.15/hour) — flooring installers and tile and stone setters.
  • $47,549 per year — helpers in the masonry and tile trades.

For shop owners, the payroll benchmark that matters is total labor per installed job. With median installer wages around $26–28/hour and loaded labor costs typically running 1.3–1.5× wage after taxes and insurance — workers' compensation in stone fabrication is expensive — a two-person install crew costs the shop $70–$90 per labor hour before the truck leaves the yard.

Where the material mix is heading

The most reliable material-trend data comes not from market-research share estimates (which conflict across firms) but from customs records. USITC import data analyzed by Stone World shows the January 2025 → January 2026 shift: engineered quartz fell from 38% to 34% of countertop imports while natural stone rose to 66.4% — and within natural stone, quartzite imports jumped 72.7% year over year while granite fell 49.7%.

Quartzite's surge is the demand story of the year: homeowners want natural-stone character with durability, and quartzite photographs like marble without marble's softness. Fabricators feel this directly — quartzite is harder on tooling, slower to cut and polish, and less forgiving in layout than granite. Shops pricing quartzite off a granite-derived labor model are quietly underpricing their own hours.

Engineered quartz's import decline tracks a broader story: health concerns around crystalline silica exposure, softening demand in its biggest segment, and a well-documented silicosis cluster in California. Grand View still pegs granite at roughly 28% of the US market with engineered stone close behind, but the momentum lines on the customs chart point one direction.

Silica enforcement, by the numbers

OSHA's engineered-stone focused inspection initiative (launched September 2023) produced, through May 2025: 371 inspections, 574 silica samples, 117 samples above the permissible exposure limit — 22 of them at five times the limit or higher, 6 at ten times or higher. California's parallel special-emphasis program logged more than 900 citations with roughly $1.9 million in proposed penalties.

The human toll: California's CDPH surveillance, published in NEJM Evidence in August 2026, counts 592 confirmed silicosis cases, 31 deaths, and 65 lung transplants linked to engineered-stone work since 2019 — 98% of cases among Latino men, median age at diagnosis 46. The state's STOP Act (effective January 2026) bans dry cutting outright and requires shop certification by January 2027.

Federal penalty maximums are inflation-adjusted annually: $16,131 per serious violation, $161,323 per willful or repeat violation in 2025. The demand backdrop: remodeling and housing

Countertop demand rides the remodeling cycle. Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies projects homeowner improvement and maintenance spending of roughly $518 billion by the end of 2026, growing about 2% — slower than the pandemic surge years, but steady. The kitchen and bath industry, the countertop channel's core, is forecast at $228 billion for 2026 by the NKBA's outlook, with kitchen and bath repair-and-remodel spending up 3.5%.

Housing turnover is the other lever: existing-home sales were 4.06 million in 2025, the lowest since 1995, with NAR's 2026 forecast revised from +14% down to roughly +4% as mortgage rates held near 6.5%. Practical ranges run wider: 60–68% usable yield on quartz is common, veined natural stone often lands 55–62%, and world-class nesting pushes 74–80%.

The spread between 60% and 75% yield on a $3,000 slab is $450 — per slab, every slab. The market is not evenly distributed. California alone counts more than 1,300 fabrication operations — roughly a quarter of the national employer-fabricator base — which is why the state's silica enforcement regime functions as a national bellwether. Texas and Florida follow as high-volume residential markets, driven by sustained new-construction and remodel activity in their metros.

Segment behavior differs more than regional totals. Luxury-market shops in coastal metros run higher margins on exotic and bookmatched work but eat longer lead times and heavier material costs. Volume shops in growing metros compete on turnaround and price, where yield optimization and scheduling discipline matter more than material artistry. The BLS occupation data reflects this: the trades pay a median $26–28/hour, but shops commanding premium segments pay well above it to hold experienced templaters and installers.
