The sink categories (and who picks what)
Most stone jobs land in one of a few sink categories. Undermount sinks mount below the counter and are the default with stone tops — crumbs wipe straight into the bowl and the deck line stays clean. Drop-in (top-mount) sinks sit through the cutout with a rim that overlaps the stone; they are more forgiving to install and common in budget-conscious or utility applications. Farmhouse (apron-front) sinks replace a section of the cabinet face with the sink's own front panel, and integrated sinks go further still, with the sink basin — sometimes plus a drainboard — cut into the stone itself. Bar and prep sinks follow the same rules in miniature.
Who picks the sink matters less than when: the exact model needs to be known before template, because everything downstream — cutout geometry, reveal, support, holes — hangs on it.
Undermount reveals: positive, negative, zero
With undermounts, the reveal describes how the cutout relates to the sink rim. A positive reveal leaves a small lip of the sink flange visible under the stone; it is forgiving to fabricate and easy to caulk. A zero reveal cuts the stone flush to the flange — no lip, no overhang, the cleanest look but the least tolerance for error. A negative reveal lets the stone overhang the bowl slightly, hiding the rim entirely and putting a polished stone edge right above the water.
Each style trades looks against fabrication tolerance, so confirm the reveal in writing before cutting. Changing a reveal after the fact is expensive rework, not a touch-up.

Farmhouse sinks: support and cabinet changes
A farmhouse sink is not just a cutout — it is a cabinet modification. The apron-front design replaces part of the cabinet's face, and the cabinet box usually needs bracing or a dedicated support system built in. That matters because farmhouse sinks are heavy, especially fireclay and cast-iron models, and the countertop adds more weight across the span on top of them.
The shop should confirm the cabinet is actually built for the sink before template day: correct opening width, proper support rails, and the sink on site so the apron height against the finished stone can be checked. Stone cannot fix a cabinet problem — it can only expose one.
Cutouts: exact model or exact trouble
A cutout is not generic. Every sink model has its own dimensions, corner radii, and flange geometry, and the cutout must match the exact model — one brand's template will not fit another's bowl, and a size that looks close on a spec sheet is not close at the flange. Fabricators work from the manufacturer's template or the physical sink, with the model number confirmed in writing.
The golden rule: sink on site before template. If the sink arrives back-ordered, swapped, or substituted after the cutout is cut, the fix ranges from rework to a new top. Holes: faucets, dispensers, and soap
Beyond the bowl, the stone usually carries drilled holes: the faucet — one hole for a single-lever model, up to four for traditional setups — plus a soap or lotion dispenser, an air gap where the plumbing code requires one, and filtered-water taps. Each hole is drilled in the shop with diamond tooling, and each is a place where a wrong measurement becomes permanent.
Placement needs thought too. Faucet holes sit close to the wall, which matters when there is a window or a slab splash above; dispenser holes need clearance from the bowl cutout and from each other. Putting the sink details in the job record
Sink problems are rarely cutting problems — they are communication problems. The model number, reveal style, hole layout, and any cabinet changes should live in the job record next to the drawing, so the estimator prices the cutout and holes correctly, the shop cuts to the right template, and the installer arrives knowing exactly what the cabinet looks like.

A negative reveal means the countertop overhangs the sink bowl slightly, so the sink's rim is hidden beneath the stone and you see a thin polished stone edge when you look down at the sink. Contrast that with a positive reveal (a visible lip of the sink flange under the cutout) and a zero reveal (stone cut flush to the flange). Negative reveals look clean and sweep crumbs straight into the bowl, but they demand precise fabrication.
Can you cut a sink cutout on site?
Cutouts are almost always fabricated in the shop, where water-fed tooling and flat benches do the job cleanly and accurately. Site cutting is limited to minor adjustments at best — it is dusty, messy, and risky for the finish around the cutout.
