Every material in the shop behaves differently under the blade, at the polisher, and in the customer's kitchen. A fabricator who knows granite cold may struggle with quartzite. A shop that excels at quartz fabrication may crack porcelain on a regular basis. Knowing which stone you are holding — its hardness, porosity, heat behavior, and fabrication quirks — is the difference between a clean install and a callback.

Natural stone vs engineered stone
The fundamental split in countertop materials is between natural stone — slabs cut directly from quarried rock — and engineered stone, which is manufactured from ground mineral particles bound with resin. This is not just an academic distinction. It changes how you fabricate, how you price, and how you advise the customer.
Natural stone varies from slab to slab in color, pattern, and porosity. Two slabs of the same granite can have different mineral compositions, different hardness levels, and different sealing needs. This variability is part of the appeal for customers — they are buying something unique — but it is a fabrication challenge because you cannot assume consistency. Every slab needs inspection before it goes on the saw. A crack that is invisible on the face may run through the slab and only reveal itself during cutting.

Understanding hardness and fabrication difficulty
Material hardness directly affects your tooling costs, cycle times, and the skill level required to produce a quality result. On the Mohs scale, quartzite typically measures 7, granite ranges from 6 to 7, marble sits around 3 to 5, and soapstone is around 1 to 2. Quartz (engineered) falls in the 5 to 6 range but behaves differently than natural stone of the same hardness because of its resin content.
For the shop floor, hardness translates to blade life, feed rates, and polishing time. Quartzite consumes diamond blades roughly two to three times faster than granite. Granite: the fabrication workhorse
Granite is an igneous rock formed from cooled magma, composed primarily of feldspar and quartz. It is the material that most fabricators cut their teeth on — figuratively and sometimes literally — because it cuts cleanly, edges well, and polishes to a predictable finish. Granite varies in porosity by color and origin: lighter granites tend to be more porous and benefit from annual sealing, while darker, denser granites may need less frequent treatment.
From a fabrication standpoint, granite is the most forgiving material in most shops. Blades last longer than they do on quartzite, edges polish without extraordinary effort, and seam matching, while important, is less critical than with heavily veined materials. The biggest granite fabrication risk is cracking at thin sections — narrow overhangs, sharp inside corners, and thin backsplash returns can fail if the material has internal stress or if the cut path is not planned carefully.
Granite resists heat well, making it a practical choice for kitchens where customers may set down hot pans. It can stain if a spill sits, especially on lighter colors, but proper sealing mitigates that risk. Quartzite: the hardest material in the shop
Quartzite is metamorphosed sandstone — natural stone that has been transformed under heat and pressure into a dense mass of interlocking quartz grains. It is typically harder than granite on the Mohs scale, with dramatic veining that commands premium pricing from customers. It also demands more from the shop: slower feed rates, more frequent blade changes, steady cooling, and more polishing passes to achieve a high gloss.
The fabrication challenge with quartzite is twofold. First, the hardness: quartzite wears through diamond blades faster than any other common countertop material, and it generates more heat during cutting, which requires consistent water cooling to prevent thermal damage. Second, the silica content: quartzite is high in crystalline silica, so cutting and grinding generate respirable dust that must be controlled with wet cutting, ventilation, and proper PPE. This is not optional — it is an OSHA requirement and a health imperative.
Seam matching is critical because the veining is often the reason the customer chose the material. Bookmatched quartzite slabs require layout planning at the slab yard, not at the saw. Always confirm the specific quartzite's density — some are more porous than others and benefit from sealing, while very dense quartzites absorb almost nothing. Marble: selling the beauty, managing expectations
Marble is metamorphosed limestone, prized for its luminous surface and classic veining. It is softer than granite and quartzite, more porous, and more susceptible to etching from acidic liquids like lemon juice, vinegar, and wine. Customers who choose marble are choosing aesthetics over durability, and part of your job as a fabricator is setting expectations: marble will develop a patina, it needs sealing, and it is not the right choice for every kitchen.
Fabrication-wise, marble cuts and polishes beautifully but dents and scratches more easily than harder stones. Edges should be handled with care, particularly mitered edges and thin returns, which are more fragile in marble than in granite or quartz. Seams require attention to pattern matching, and the material is more prone to micro-chipping at cut edges, which can be mitigated with proper blade selection and feed rates.
The customer conversation around marble should be honest. Some customers want marble specifically because it develops character over time — they see the patina as a feature, not a flaw. Others expect it to look the same in ten years as it does on install day. Knowing which customer you are talking to changes how you present the material and what you put in the care instructions. Underpromise and overdeliver — it is better to surprise a customer with how well the marble holds up than to disappoint them with etching you did not mention.

Porcelain and Dekton: sintered stone fabrication
Sintered stone — including porcelain slabs and Dekton — is made by compressing mineral particles and firing them at extreme temperatures. The result is a material that is UV resistant, heat resistant, stain resistant, and thinner than traditional stone slabs. It is increasingly popular for countertops, outdoor kitchens, and large-format wall cladding, particularly in modern and minimalist designs.
The fabrication challenge is brittleness. Sintered stone can chip and crack more easily than natural stone, particularly during cutting and handling. It requires specialized diamond tooling, slower feed rates, and careful support during transport and installation. Edges are typically mitered or laminated rather than bullnosed, and cutouts need reinforcement — especially around sink openings, where the thin profile makes the material more vulnerable to stress.
Dekton and porcelain are not interchangeable — each manufacturer's formulation behaves differently, and the tools that work on one brand may not work on another. Always test on scrap before committing to a fabrication approach on a new material. The material cost is also significantly higher than most natural stones, so mistakes are more expensive. A cracked Dekton slab is a much bigger financial hit than a cracked granite slab.

Material cost and how it affects pricing
Material cost is usually the largest single line item on any fabrication job, and it varies dramatically by material type. Granite ranges widely by color and origin — basic flecked granites might run $40 to $60 per square foot at wholesale, while exotic colors with dramatic veining can exceed $100. Engineered quartz typically falls in the $50 to $80 range. Quartzite commands a premium because of its rarity and fabrication difficulty, often $70 to $120 per square foot. Marble spans a wide range depending on variety, from $50 for basic Carrara to well over $150 for rare Calacatta. Porcelain and Dekton sit at the high end, often $80 to $150 per square foot.
These are wholesale slab prices, not installed prices. Your job pricing needs to account for yield — the percentage of purchased material that ends up in the customer's kitchen — and for waste, which is the percentage that does not. A $60 per square foot granite with 15% waste effectively costs $69 per square foot of installed area. A $100 per square foot quartzite with 30% waste effectively costs $130 per square foot. Understanding this math is essential for quoting accurately and protecting margin.
Material cost also affects cash flow. Premium slabs require larger material purchases per job, which means more working capital tied up in inventory. Shops that track material cost per job and compare it against their estimates learn quickly where their pricing model is calibrated correctly and where it needs adjustment. Soapstone, travertine, and limestone
These three materials share a natural, matte aesthetic that appeals to specific customer segments — farmhouse kitchens, rustic designs, and European-inspired spaces. Each has distinct properties that affect fabrication and customer expectations.
Soapstone is non-porous and heat resistant but soft enough to dent and scratch. Many customers see this as part of its character — it develops a patina that can be enhanced with mineral oil. Fabrication is relatively straightforward because the material does not require sealing and cuts cleanly, but the softness means edges and surfaces need careful handling to avoid marring during installation.
Travertine and limestone are sedimentary stones with natural voids that are typically filled and sealed at the factory. They are softer than granite and require more careful handling during fabrication and install. Both are porous and need regular sealing to prevent staining. The filled voids can sometimes separate during cutting, which creates a fabrication nuisance that requires touch-up before install.
For all three materials, set customer expectations about maintenance and patina development. Pricing should reflect the additional handling care and the fact that these materials often require more finishing attention than harder stones. Material selection at the slab yard
Selecting slabs at the yard is a skill that directly impacts fabrication quality and customer satisfaction. Pull the actual slabs that will be used for the job — not a "similar" piece from a different bundle. Inspect for cracks, excessive pits, color variation outside the customer's expectations, and directional veining that will affect seam matching. Photograph the slabs with a reference for scale and note the bundle and lot numbers in your inventory system.
For complex jobs with bookmatching or vein matching, pull slabs in person and plan the layout before quoting. The slab you select at the yard determines the yield, the seam placement, and the final look — all of which should be reflected in your estimate. Do not assume you can fix a bad slab selection at the saw. By then, the material is already purchased and the customer is already expecting a result that matches what you showed them.
Building relationships with slab suppliers gives you first access to premium material, better pricing on volume, and the ability to hold slabs for customer selection. Treat supplier relationships as a strategic asset, not a transactional commodity. A supplier who knows your business will set aside the best slabs before they hit the open market, call you when a special piece comes in, and work with you on pricing for volume commitments.
