Two stones, one chemistry
Travertine and limestone look different on the rack, but they share the same essential chemistry: both are calcium-based sedimentary stones. That single fact drives everything about how they behave in a home. Like marble — which is limestone that has been recrystallized under heat and pressure — both stones react with acids. Lemon juice, vinegar, wine, and tomato will etch the surface, leaving dull spots that no sealer can prevent, because etching is a chemical reaction, not a stain.
They are also softer and more porous than granite, which means they scratch more readily and absorb liquids faster. None of this makes them bad materials — it makes them specific materials. Shops that frame these traits honestly at the point of sale end up with happy clients; shops that let the stone sell itself end up with callbacks. Porosity, filling, and finishes
Travertine forms around mineral springs, which leaves it full of natural pits and voids running through the slab. Most commercial travertine is therefore filled — the voids are packed with cement or epoxy filler at the mill — and almost always sold honed rather than polished. Limestone is more uniform, but still typically more porous than granite. Both benefit from a penetrating sealer far more than harder stones do.
The honed finish is not just an aesthetic choice. Softer calcium-based stones are harder to bring to and hold a high gloss, and a matte surface also makes the etches and wear marks of daily life read as texture rather than damage. Fabrication notes (softer means different)
Softer stone is easier on tooling in some ways, but it brings its own realities. Edges and cutouts can chip or tear rather than shear cleanly, so sharp tooling and steady handling matter. Unfilled or partially filled travertine presents a special decision: edge profiles may expose voids, and the shop and client should agree beforehand on whether those are filled during fabrication or left as character.
Handling deserves respect too. These stones flex and pit more readily than granite during transport and installation, so plan support for overhangs and weak sections the same way you would for any fragile material. Slower, deliberate work with the right abrasives produces clean, even honed finishes — rushing shows.
Care and sealing expectations
Sealing is not optional on calcium-based stone, and it is not a one-time event either. A penetrating sealer slows absorption and buys time to wipe up spills, but it does nothing against acid etching. Clients need all three sentences: seal it regularly, wipe spills promptly, and expect a patina to develop where the stone lives its life.
